Pathogen Information
This black mold(Sooty mold) is not the same as the household black mold(Stachybotrys chartarum). It can be can cause of one of many fungal infectiond and can be identified by:
- Black powdery growth on leaves and stems
- Presents of insect damage in the area
Environmental Conditions
- Temperature: 60-80°F
- Humidity: 90%+
- Without honeydew from sap sucking insects (aphids) it is unlikely to form
Disease Progression
Early Stage
Small insects that leave behind a sticky residue.
Mid Stage
Black powdery growth begins forming on leaves and stems.
Late Stage
Black groths begin to flack off as the leave begin to yellow and die.
Prevention Methods
- Treat regularly for pests
- Maintain proper plant spacing
- Remove and destroy infected plant debris
- Improve air circulation
Treatment Options
*When treating for sooty mold the insect problem needs to be treated first.*
- Wash mold of with mild soap and water
- Treat for known pests sush as aphids
