Pathogen Information
Clubroot is cause by a protist known as Plasmodiophora brassicae. Thriving in wet acidic soils symptoms include:
- Swollen club shaped roots
- Yellowing leaves that wilt on warmer days
- Stunted growth in the devlopement
Environmental Conditions
- Temperature: 70-75°F is the ideal temp range
- Soil: Moist and acidic
- Most effected species: Plants belonging to the cabbage family
Disease Progression
Early Stage
No visible symptoms as clubs begin to form
Mid Stage
yellowing leaves that wilt on warmer days
Late Stage
Deformed and decayed root allows for secondary infections
Prevention Methods
- Remove weeds that are suseptable such as charlock and wild radish
- Maintain proper plant spacing and good drainage
- Remove and destroy infected plant debris
- Rotate crops with non-susceptible plants
- a pH avobe 7 can inhibt growth
