Pathogen Information
Fusarium wilt is caused by fungus Fusarium oxysporum a soil born fungi that can be identified by the characteristics:
- yellowing and wilting of leaves
- Stunted growth
- Browning along the vascular tissue
- Roots can begin to rot
Environmental Conditions
- Temperature: 70-80°F
- Humidity: Thirives in wet soils with an acidic soil
- Most effected species: Nightshade are the most commonly affected however some strains have mutated becoming more destructive such as the panama disease
Disease Progression
Early Stage
The fungus invades through the roots showing no symptoms at first
Mid Stage
as it spreads the xylem tissue will become brown and leaves will begin wilting
Late Stage
the plant will die off and the fungus will release spores to spread
Prevention Methods
- avoid heavy watering and dont water after rainfall
- Maintain proper plant spacing
- Remove and destroy infected plant debris
- Use disease-free seeds and resistant varieties
- Rotate crops with non-susceptible plants
