Entomology
Spider Mites being are web producing mites that are know for leaving a thick coat of web over the plants the infest. They are distinguished by:
- Eight legs
- Two body segments, the cephalothorax and abdomen
- Ability to produce silken webbing
- Often reddish, greenish, or brown in color
- Microscopic size
Reproduction Cycle
Reproduction Cycle
Mites reproduce through sexual reproduction, with some species capable of parthenogenesis (reproduction without mating). The life cycle of a mite can be broken down into four stages:
- Egg: 3 to 7 days to hatch
- Larva: 2 to 3 days (six-legged stage)
- Nymph: 4 to 7 days
- Adult: Females live 2-4 weeks and can lay 100+ eggs. Males typically live 1-2 weeks
Social Aspects
Mites display various behavioral patterns depending on species:
- Tend to cluster in protected plant areas
- Multiple generations overlap in infested areas
- Dispersal behavior through wind or crawling
- Aggregate feeding patterns on host plants
- Population explosion under favorable conditions
Treatment Options
- Spray plants with strong water stream to dislodge mites
- Apply miticides specifically designed for mite control
- Use neem oil
- insecticidal soaps
- Remove heavily infested leaves
- Isolate infected plants to prevent spread
