Entomology
Stink bugs are shield-shaped insects measuring 12-17mm in length. Most common garden species are brown or green in color. Their most distinctive features include:
- Shield "pentagon" shaped body
- Five-segmented antennae
- Piercing-sucking mouthparts
- Large triangular plate on back
- Hardened wing covers when at rest
- Scent glands that produce defensive odor
- Six jointed legs
- Broad, flattened body shape
Reproduction Cycle
Stink bugs undergo incomplete metamorphosis with a relatively straightforward life cycle. In most regions, they complete 1-2 generations per year:
- Eggs: Typically hatch within 5 days of laying
- Nymphs: this stage will last about 5 weeks sheading it skin once a week
- Adults: Most species can live for several month where will will lay multiple egg clusters
Social Aspects
Stink bugs exhibit little social behaviors but have been know to:
- Gather as Nymphs in large feeding groups
- gather together during the winter months
- They will release defensive chemicals when threatened
- Use phermones to signal mating
Treatment Options
- bifenthrin or pyrethrum insecticides
- Commercial available traps
- Apply insecticidal soap
- Clear Leave and other debris over fall
