Stink bugs are shield-shaped insects measuring 12-17mm in length. Most common garden species are brown or green in color. Their most distinctive features include:

  • Shield "pentagon" shaped body
  • Five-segmented antennae
  • Piercing-sucking mouthparts
  • Large triangular plate on back
  • Hardened wing covers when at rest
  • Scent glands that produce defensive odor
  • Six jointed legs
  • Broad, flattened body shape

Reproduction Cycle

Stink bugs undergo incomplete metamorphosis with a relatively straightforward life cycle. In most regions, they complete 1-2 generations per year:

  • Eggs: Typically hatch within 5 days of laying
  • Nymphs: this stage will last about 5 weeks sheading it skin once a week
  • Adults: Most species can live for several month where will will lay multiple egg clusters

Social Aspects

Stink bugs exhibit little social behaviors but have been know to:

  • Gather as Nymphs in large feeding groups
  • gather together during the winter months
  • They will release defensive chemicals when threatened
  • Use phermones to signal mating

Treatment Options

  • bifenthrin or pyrethrum insecticides
  • Commercial available traps
  • Apply insecticidal soap
